- Week of January 14, 1996
-
- Computer Game Weekly (CGW) is a new electronic newsletter dedicated to
- gamers. Either every week of every other week (we haven't decided on the sche-
- dule yet), we will put out an issue of this small publication, with a single
- featured game, one or two previews, an editorial, a flashback to a classic game,
- and one or two other articles. This is not meant to be a full-fledged elec-
- tronic magazine; rather, it is simply a sort of newsletter.
-
- To use CGW, just type "CGW1" at the DOS prompt (inside the CGW direct-
- ory, of course). You will be presented with a menu of five choices. Use the
- up and down arrow keys to navigate this menu. Pressing <ESCAPE> will allow
- you to quit. Pressing <ENTER> will allow you to read the article that you have
- highlighted with the arrow keys.
-
- At the menu, you can press "H" for help. Pressing "R" will run a DOS
- shell session; type in "EXIT" and press <RETURN> to go back to the menu. If
- you hit "S", one of two screen savers will appear. Pressing any key or moving
- the mouse will return you to the menu. Pressing "X" from the menu will quit,
- just like pressing <ESCAPE>.
-
- All reviews and previews have a short summary at the end. If you don't
- want to read a full review, just scroll to the end. By the way, the scale of
- ratings (which is by no means meant to be objective) is as follows: EXCELLENT,
- VERY GOOD, GOOD, FAIR, POOR, ABYSMAL. These ratings are based on play value,
- bang for the buck, and replayability. Bells and whistles are considered only if
- exceptionally good or horrendously bad.
-
- If you want to print out any of the articles, the .DAT files are all
- plain ASCII. Use a text editor to figure out which is which. They are organ-
- ized sensibly and you should be able to figure it out. To print, either use
- your text editor, or type COPY filename PRN: at the DOS prompt, where filename
- is the name of the .DAT file. If your printer is on a serial port, the com-
- mand would be COPY filename LPT1: (or LPT2:).
-
- We've got a special article, entitled "The Games of 1995," that was or-
- iginally a buyer's guide for the Christmas season. Now, it's either an inter-
- esting piece of history, or a buyer's guide for the post-Christmas season. Your
- choice. Anyhow, check it out. It'll keep you up to date on what's hot and what's
- not.
-
- There are also some screen shots of certain games included; to view the
- shots, all you have to do is type the name of the game (for instance, to see the
- Crusader: No Remorse screen shots, type CRUSADER) at the DOS prompt. Some shots
- require Super VGA support. All screen shots are in executable format. Write to
- DJPS31D@prodigy.com if you want them in other formats (.GIF, .JPG, .PCX, or .BMP
- only).
-
- NOTE: You may distribute CGW to any friends, BBSs, or Internet sites you
- wish, AS LONG AS YOU LEAVE ALL THE FILES INSIDE THE ARCHIVE! For your own per-
- sonal use, you may destroy, delete, dismember, change, etc. anything inside CGW.
- But for distribution, please leave it in its original form. Thank you!
-
- For questions, comments, suggestions, etc., please e-mail the editor at
- DJPS31D@prodigy.com. For now, enjoy this issue, and in a week or two, watch for
- CGW2! It will feature EA Sports' new FIFA Soccer '96, and the flashback game
- will be (surprise, surprise) DOOM and DOOM II!
